NOVA DENISE
Creating Our Bodies, Our Temples is an intuitive process that begins with objects I have collected over years. Eventually, I am ready to mix the plaster, cement, grout—to layer materials and start forming shapes. Favorite objects include cowry shells, jewelry—old and new, beads, seedpods, pinecones, and my grandmother’s crochet work. Materials are repeated and layered on the chest plate, as their gathering was in a way, repetitive and layered over the years when the art objects design was gestating inside me. For me, these layered fragments are like the stories of women. They are a way of paying homage to women and their forgotten stories. Women’s vulnerability is also our strength to face our futures, to claim, My Body, My Temple.
