joan fenicle
Joan is a multi-media artist, living on an acreage bordering national forest near Placitas, just northeast of Albuquerque, NM. She is an active member of the arts communities in both Placitas and Albuquerque, a long-time member of Rainbow Artists and a founding member of Perspectives, a Placitas-based photography group and Wild Hearts Gallery, an artists collective in Placitas.. In 2016 the Albuquerque Art Business Associated named her a Local Treasure, an award given to artists who also give back to their communities.
"I have been travelling the caminos and callejones of New Mexico and Colorado for over 40 years, capturing villages and vistas in paintings and photographs. As I travel the back roads (my favorite past time), I am looking for stories. An ancient tree, a lonely road, a village chapel, an old truck, abandoned buildings and ruins or a dramatic cloud formation catch my eye and become a part of the image collection that includes negatives, slides and now digital images. Back in the studio, an image may be simplified to produce a study for a painting, may become a fine art photograph or may be filed away as reference material for an imaginary scene"
Her work can be seen in her Placitas studio by appointment, every Mother's Day weekend during Placitas Studio Tour and at Wild Hearts Gallery in Placitas. She has also co-authored two books of photos and poetry with her cousin Karen Biddle, Placitas del Sol and Pilgrims and Promises and a book of her black and white photography: Beyond the Noise.
