mari holmes: 1919-2010

Picture
Mari was born in New York City in 1919 and for 40 years was a resident of Queens. There she became an accomplished and recognized artist. in August of 1988 Mari moved her home and studio to Albuquerque where she became active in the arts community and became one of the founding members of Rainbow Artists.

Her philosophy was simple, to continue to create in her chosen form, all that
her life experience has brought her to. Her work reflects a heritage as diverse as
a great- grandmother who was a slave in Virginia to an Irish grandfather. It was ever changing and brought her great joy.

She described herself as a gatherer - a  woman who found images awaiting rebirth through rocks, found wood, wire, fabric.  "Even as a child growing up in the woods of Long Island I was fascinated with  found objects, arranging these treasures in boxes which evolved to back-lit  boxes, often containing forms. My interest in figures continued throughout the  evolution of my art form, appearing in quilts, collages, prints and paintings.  Now my figures have become the art form itself." Some of Mari's figures were doll sized; others were life sized, taking on a life of their own.
