martha heard

Picture
Martha was born in Chicago, grew up in the Panhandle of Texas, lived in Baghdad
and Madrid, before going to graduate schools in Spanish literature. She taught
Spanish for many years to high school and university students and continued to
travel. “Photography is one of my passions. Through photography I record the
visual impact of the world around me: street scenes, daily life, special celebrations, and landscapes. I try to capture the play of light and shadow, textures, colors, shapes, and most difficult of all, how people live and feel. My photographs are a way of sharing with others the world I experience. Recently I have begun writing short pieces about my photographs, thus combining two of my interests - writing and photography.”

Martha shared with Rainbow a PowerPoint presentation on her life in Càlig, Castellón Spain: From Laughter to Tears: 32 Summers and One Year; No es socia; Integrating into a Spanish Village. And, we are sharing it with you (see below). She has also written an intermediate level text for students of Spanish with reading and exercises on life in Càlig titled, Voces de Cambio: A Cultural Reader. To follow progress on other projects you can access her blogs:

The first time Martha went went to Càlig was right after St. Johns Day, June 24, 1978 when she went to see the four-story whitewashed stone house she had bought sight unseen the year before. Càlig is a village of around 2,000, five miles from the Mediterranean.
