Barbara Endicott
My approach to portraiture is to capture a likeness, as well as revealing an individual's character. I am intrigued by the absolute uniqueness of each human face and I seek to find the subtle differences. We share common facial features but are never exactly the same as anyone else living now, in the past or in the future. Each face is a particular configuration of proportion but more importantly is a map of life experience.
My desire is to express and reveal the basic humanity of an individual without idealization. I enjoy the variety of visages in our world and portraiture is a way I can enjoy the differences. When I am drawing or painting an individual, I feel their presence strongly. I consider the portrait to be successful if this is conveyed to the viewer as well.
Born in San Bernardino, CA. on April 29,1952. Resided for varying amounts of time in different places including Paris, drawing and modeling in the city's ateliers. Have lived in Albuquerque since 1983. Earned Bachelor of Fine Arts, May 1985 and Teaching Certification in Visual Arts K-12, June 2001 at UNM in Albuquerque, NM. Retired art teacher of 14 years in public schools.
Portraiture and figurative is emphasized in artwork, as individuals or as part of group compositions rendered in a realistic style.
