Barbara Fried
Featured Artist Nov-Dec 2011, Jan 2012

I attended the Philadelphia Museum School of Art after high school, then did not do art again until late in my adult life. I began by painting in acrylics and experimenting with pastels and collage. I painted without an idea in mind and developed the images that emerged, frequently painting with my non-dominant hand for more freedom.

My preference for layering paint led me to work in oils. This led me to further study at the New York Academy of Art to improve my technique in both drawing and painting.

On a trip to the southwest I was inspired by the colors and textures of the land and my paintings began to reflect this. The vast openness and solitude added a spiritual dimension to my art.

Bright colors and bold compositions are favorites of mine to use in my art.

Nature and observing birds are an enjoyable pastime for me. From sketches of birds in their natural habitats I develop paintings in which I try to capture the essence of the bird.

I have exhibited in numerous juried shows. The positive feedback I receive at these exhibits and the support of family and friends encourages me to continue to develop my art.
